UK Graduate Route Visa 2026–27: New 18-Month Rule, Eligibility & Complete Guide for Indian Students

Quick answer: The UK Graduate Route is being shortened from two years to 18 months for Bachelor’s and Master’s graduates. The change is confirmed, not just proposed. It applies to Graduate visa applications made on or after 1 January 2027. Applications made on or before 31 December 2026 still receive two years. PhD and other doctoral graduates keep three years.

Key takeaways for Indian students

  • UK Graduate Route 18 months: applies to Bachelor’s and Master’s graduates who apply on or after 1 January 2027.
  • UK Graduate Route duration before that: two years for applications made up to 31 December 2026. PhD graduates keep three years.
  • UK Graduate Route changes affect the Graduate Route visa UK-wide, with no separate rule for Indian nationals.
  • UK post study work visa for Indian students: no job offer or sponsor is needed to apply, which is why it remains attractive for anyone wanting to stay in UK after Masters.
  • UK Graduate Visa 2026 vs UK Graduate Visa 2027: your application date, not your graduation date, decides which rule you get.
  • UK Skilled Worker visa after graduation is the main route to stay beyond the Graduate visa, and the Graduate visa cannot be extended.

1. Introduction: Why the Graduate Route Matters for Indian Students

For many Indian families, choosing the UK for a Master’s degree is not only about the qualification. It is about what comes next. The Graduate Route, widely called the UK post study work visa, lets international students stay in the UK after completing an eligible degree to work or look for work. It needs no job offer and no employer sponsor. That single feature has made the UK one of the most attractive study destinations for Indian students, and searches for the UK Graduate Route Visa 2027, UK Graduate Visa 2027 and UK post study work visa 2026 have grown as the rules change, alongside a one-year Master’s format that keeps tuition and living costs shorter than in many competing countries.

That picture is now changing. The UK Government announced in its May 2025 Immigration White Paper that the post-study period would be reduced, and the change was then written into the Immigration Rules. From 1 January 2027, Bachelor’s and Master’s graduates who apply for the Graduate visa will receive 18 months of permission instead of two years. The UK Graduate Route new rules are therefore no longer a rumour or a proposal. They are law, with a fixed start date. You can read the original policy in the May 2025 Immigration White Paper on GOV.UK.

Why this matters if you are planning for the UK Graduate Route Visa 2026 or 2027:

  • Less time to land a qualifying job. Six months fewer means your job search has to begin on day one, not after graduation.
  • Career planning becomes part of course selection. Internships, placements, employer networks and university careers support carry more weight.
  • The Skilled Worker visa after graduation is the real destination. You need to understand its salary and sponsorship requirements early.
  • Different degree levels are treated differently. Bachelor’s and Master’s graduates fall under the 18-month rule. Doctoral graduates do not.

This guide explains exactly what has changed, who is affected, how the application date decides your outcome, what the eligibility rules are, and whether the UK is still a sensible choice for Indian students. If you are still choosing a country or course, our guides on where and what to study and study destinations are a good starting point. Every rule below is stated as it stands at the time of writing, and we clearly separate what is in force, what is confirmed for the future, and what is still only proposed.

How to read the status of each rule in this article

Status

Meaning

In force now

Applies to applications today. Example: two years for Bachelor’s and Master’s applicants until 31 December 2026.

Confirmed future rule

Already in the Immigration Rules with a set start date. Example: 18 months for applications from 1 January 2027.

Proposed only

Announced or consulted on, but not yet law. Example: the 10-year baseline for settlement (see Section 9).

2. What Is the UK Graduate Route Visa?

The Graduate Route, officially the Graduate visa, is a temporary post-study immigration route that opened in July 2021. It allows people who have successfully completed an eligible UK course to stay in the UK after their Student visa ends. It is often still called the PSW or post-study work visa, but the two names refer to the same permission today.

Who is it designed for?

It is designed for international students who have studied in the UK on a Student visa (or the older Tier 4 General student visa) and completed a Bachelor’s degree, a postgraduate degree or another eligible qualification at an approved UK higher education provider.

Why does it exist?

The stated purpose is to give graduates a bridge between study and work. The Government’s rationale for shortening it is that many graduates were not moving into graduate-level jobs within the two-year window, so it wants the transition to happen faster.

Is sponsorship or a job offer required?

No. You do not need a sponsor, an employer endorsement, a job offer, a minimum salary or a maintenance (savings) requirement to apply. This is the key difference between the Graduate visa and the Skilled Worker visa.

What work can Graduate visa holders do?

  • Work in most jobs, at any skill level, and change employers freely.
  • Look for work.
  • Be self-employed, start a business or volunteer.
  • Study, subject to the usual rules. Note that some restrictions apply, for example you generally cannot work as a professional sportsperson or sports coach.

Graduate visa holders cannot claim most benefits, which the Immigration Rules call public funds.

Can dependants stay or join?

Only people who were already your dependants on your Student visa can be included in your Graduate visa application. You cannot bring new dependants, such as a spouse you married after your Student visa was granted, under the Graduate route. A child born in the UK during your stay is a separate situation and should be checked on GOV.UK. Each dependant pays the same application fee and health surcharge as the main applicant.

Important: The Graduate Route is a temporary route, not a direct path to permanent residence. It cannot be extended, and time spent on it does not count towards settlement. To stay longer, you must switch to another route before it expires, most commonly the Skilled Worker visa.

3. UK Graduate Route 2026–27: What Is Changing?

The 18-month rule applies to applications made on or after 1 January 2027, subject to the latest UK government rules. Always confirm the current position on the official GOV.UK Graduate visa page before applying, because immigration rules can change again.

2 years vs 3 years vs 18 months: who gets what?

  • 2 years: Bachelor’s and Master’s graduates whose Graduate visa application is made on or before 31 December 2026. This is the historical standard since the route opened.
  • 3 years: PhD and other doctoral graduates. This has not changed and is not affected by the 2027 reform.
  • 18 months: Bachelor’s and Master’s graduates whose Graduate visa application is made on or after 1 January 2027.

Why the application date matters more than the graduation date

The official wording ties the new duration to the date you apply, not the date you finish your course, receive your results or attend your graduation ceremony. That means two students who finish the same course a few weeks apart could receive different outcomes purely because of when they submit their applications.

You also do not need to wait for your graduation ceremony. You can apply once your university has told the Home Office that you have successfully completed your course. That confirmation, rather than the ceremony, is the trigger. Since the Graduate visa can only be applied for while your Student visa is still valid, timing is a real planning issue for anyone finishing near the end of 2026.

What is the official timeline?

  • 12 May 2025: The Immigration White Paper announces the plan to reduce the Graduate Route.
  • 14 October 2025: The change is included in a Statement of Changes to the Immigration Rules laid before Parliament.
  • 11 November 2025: Home Office guidance is updated to show the duration as 18 months for applications from 1 January 2027, and GOV.UK’s Graduate visa information is updated accordingly. UKCISA summarises the change in its Student and Graduate rules update.
  • 1 January 2027: The 18-month period starts applying to new Graduate visa applications from Bachelor’s and Master’s graduates.

4. Who Will Be Affected by the 18-Month Rule?

The scenarios below apply the confirmed rule. They assume your course is eligible, you meet the other Graduate visa requirements, and the rules do not change again before you apply.

Scenario A: Student graduating in 2026

If you complete your course in 2026 and your university confirms completion to the Home Office in time, you can apply on or before 31 December 2026 and receive two years. The risk is delay. If your results, course completion confirmation or application slip into January 2027, you would receive 18 months. If you are in this group, speak to your university’s international student adviser now, gather your documents, and apply as soon as you are eligible rather than waiting for a ceremony.

Scenario B: Student graduating in 2027

If you finish a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in 2027, your Graduate visa application will almost certainly be made after 1 January 2027, so you should plan for 18 months. This includes most students who begin a one-year Master’s in September 2026, since they usually complete in the second half of 2027.

Scenario C: Student starting a Master’s in 2026

Plan on the basis of 18 months of post-study time. Before enrolling, look closely at the course’s placement or internship options, the university’s employer links and careers service, and how your chosen field sponsors overseas graduates. A one-year course leaves little time to build UK experience, so your post-study plan effectively starts before you arrive.

Scenario D: Student starting a Master’s in 2027

The same 18-month rule applies on the current rules. Because policy has changed repeatedly in recent years, treat this as the current position rather than a guarantee, and re-check GOV.UK closer to your application date. Build your budget and career plan around 18 months rather than hoping for two years.

Scenario E: PhD student

Doctoral graduates are treated differently. A PhD or other doctoral qualification still leads to three years of Graduate permission, and the 2027 reduction does not apply to them. Reduced Skilled Worker salary thresholds may also be available for some PhD-level roles (see Section 8).

A note on transitional rules: the official position is date-of-application based, and we have found no separate transitional protection for students who began their course before 1 January 2027. If your university tells you otherwise for your specific case, follow the written advice of your university and GOV.UK.

5. UK Graduate Route Eligibility 2026–27

The UK Graduate Route eligibility and UK Graduate Route requirements below reflect the current GOV.UK-linked guidance. Use this as a checklist, then verify on GOV.UK before applying. If you would like help with documents and timing, see our visa assistance service.

Requirement

What it means

Valid UK immigration status

You must be in the UK with a valid Student visa or Tier 4 (General) student visa when you apply.

Successful completion of an eligible course

The course must be at Bachelor’s level or above (or another eligible qualification). Courses below that level, such as some HNDs or foundation degrees, generally do not qualify.

Eligible education provider

Your degree must come from an approved UK higher education provider.

Study period in the UK

You must have studied in the UK with your Student or Tier 4 visa for the minimum required period, generally at least 12 months, or the whole course if it is shorter. Limited COVID-19 exceptions applied for some students.

Notification of course completion

Your university must tell the Home Office you have successfully completed. You cannot apply before this confirmation, but you do not need to wait for graduation.

Application timing

Apply before your Student visa expires. Applying after it expires is a common reason for refusal.

Location

You must be physically in the UK on the day you apply. You cannot apply from India.

Passport and identity

You will prove your identity using the UK Immigration: ID Check app or at a visa application centre, and provide your passport or other documents as requested.

Financial sponsor consent

If a government or international scholarship agency paid both your tuition fees and living costs in the 12 months before applying, you must provide written consent from that sponsor.

Immigration history

Previous immigration breaches or false or incomplete documents can lead to refusal.

Do you need a job offer, sponsor or savings?

No job offer, no sponsor, no minimum salary and no bank balance is required. This is what makes the Graduate visa flexible.

Application fee and Immigration Health Surcharge

  • Application fee: £937 per applicant, including each dependant, according to the most recent guidance we reviewed. Older pages still show £822, so check the live GOV.UK fee before paying.
  • Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS): £1,035 per year of permission, paid up front for the full length of the visa. Because the 18-month period is shorter, the total is lower, but use the official Immigration Health Surcharge calculator on GOV.UK for the exact figure, as third-party pages show inconsistent amounts.
  • Priority services: Faster decisions are available for an extra fee in some circumstances.

Processing time: A decision usually comes within about eight weeks of completing your application. If you apply after your completion is confirmed and before your Student visa ends, you can generally stay in the UK while you wait. The visa starts from the day it is approved.

6. How Long Can Indian Students Stay in the UK After a Master’s?

There is no separate rule for Indian nationals on the Graduate Route, so the UK post study work visa for Indians follows the same rules as for every other nationality. The UK Graduate Route duration depends only on your application date and degree level. In practice, an Indian student completing a taught Master’s can expect:

  • 2 years if the Graduate visa application is made on or before 31 December 2026.
  • 18 months if the application is made on or after 1 January 2027.

This is the time available on the Graduate visa itself. Anyone who secures sponsored skilled employment can switch to a Skilled Worker visa before the Graduate visa expires and stay longer. That switch is not a request for an extension, because a Graduate visa cannot be extended. It is a new application under a different route.

For most Indian students the important shift is psychological as well as legal. The old planning model, “arrive, study for a year, then use two years to find a job”, becomes “arrive, study for a year, and use 18 months, so start earlier”. Internships, part-time work within your Student visa limits, alumni networking and early applications to sponsoring employers all become more valuable. UKCISA’s Graduate route page and your university’s international office, such as Loughborough University’s Graduate route guidance, explain the process from the university side.

The UK student visa after graduation is not automatically extended. Your Student visa ends with your course, so the Graduate visa is a new application, made from inside the UK.

7. Can You Work After Graduation on the Graduate Route?

Yes. Graduate visa holders can work in almost any role without an employer needing a sponsor licence. This includes graduate schemes, part-time jobs, contract work, freelance work and running your own company. Employers do not need to sponsor you, which makes you cheaper and simpler to hire than a candidate who needs a Skilled Worker visa. That is a real advantage during the Graduate period.

However, the Graduate visa has an end date and cannot be extended. If you want to remain in the UK beyond that date, the job you take needs to lead to sponsorship. Ask employers early whether they hold a sponsor licence and whether they sponsor graduates. A job at a non-sponsoring company can be useful experience, but it will not, on its own, keep you in the UK after the Graduate visa ends.

8. Switching from the Graduate Route to a Skilled Worker Visa

The Skilled Worker visa is the most common next step. For the UK Skilled Worker visa after graduation, see the Skilled Worker visa guidance. You need a job offer from a Home Office-licensed sponsor listed on the official register of licensed sponsors. The job must be at the required skill level and meet the salary rules, and you must meet the English language requirement.

What salary is required?

Category

Minimum salary rule (rules effective from 22 July 2025)

General threshold

£41,700 a year, or the going rate for the job’s occupation code, whichever is higher

New entrants

£33,400 a year and at least 70% of the going rate. Includes those switching from a Student or Graduate visa, and people under 26.

Relevant STEM PhD

£33,400 a year and at least 80% of the going rate

Other relevant PhD

£37,500 a year and at least 90% of the going rate

Hourly floor

£17.13 per hour applies in addition

Only guaranteed basic salary counts. Bonuses, overtime and most allowances do not. Special lower rules apply in some sectors, such as health and care roles, so check the rules for your specific occupation on the GOV.UK Skilled Worker job and salary page.

Why this matters for Indian graduates: Someone switching from a Graduate visa can normally use the reduced new-entrant threshold, but the job still needs to be sponsored, skilled-level and correctly classified. Many starting salaries outside major sectors and London do not reach these thresholds, so salary expectations should be researched before choosing a course.

Practical steps to maximise your chances

  • Begin your job search in the first weeks of your course, not after graduation.
  • Target employers on the Home Office register of licensed sponsors.
  • Ask about sponsorship in the first conversation, not at the offer stage.
  • Compare the job’s salary against the correct occupation code going rate, not only the general threshold.
  • Track your Graduate visa end date from the day it is granted and plan to submit any switch application well before it.

Other routes to consider

Depending on your profile, other options include the Global Talent visa for people with exceptional talent or promise, and the Innovator Founder visa for those with an endorsed business idea. Each has its own strict criteria, so treat these as specialist options rather than a general fallback.

9. Can You Get PR After the Graduate Route?

Not directly. The Graduate Route does not lead to permanent residence by itself, and time spent on it does not count towards settlement. Permanent residence, called Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), normally comes after a qualifying period on a route that leads to settlement, such as the Skilled Worker route.

Under the rules in force at the time of our research, the standard Skilled Worker route to ILR takes five years. However, the Government has proposed an “earned settlement” model (see the GOV.UK earned settlement consultation) that would raise the standard qualifying period to ten years, with reductions or increases depending on factors such as English level, earnings, contribution and compliance. Reports up to mid-2026 said these proposals had gone through consultation but had not yet become law, and that the House of Lords committee had urged the Government to reconsider. A separate, higher English language requirement for settlement has been written into the rules and is due to take effect from 26 March 2027.

What you should take from this: treat the ten-year proposal as a proposed change, not a current rule, but plan with awareness that the settlement path may become longer. Check GOV.UK for the latest position before making any long-term decision.

10. Is the UK Still Worth Considering for Indian Students?

The honest answer is: yes for some students, and no for others. The 18-month rule does not end the opportunity, but it reduces the margin for error.

The UK still makes sense if:

  • You have a clear career target and have researched sponsoring employers in your field.
  • You have chosen a course with strong employer links, placements or a proven graduate outcomes record.
  • Your target field has starting salaries that can realistically meet Skilled Worker requirements.
  • You value UK qualifications and shorter degree formats even if you return to India or move elsewhere afterwards.

You should think harder if:

  • Your plan depends on spending a long time in the UK after graduation before finding a sponsored role.
  • The total cost of the course, including tuition, living costs and the IHS, is only justified if you stay for a set number of years.
  • You plan to settle permanently, since the settlement rules are still under reform.

Students should compare the UK with other destinations, including those on our study destinations page, on total cost, post-study rights, sponsorship prospects and long-term settlement rules, rather than on the Graduate visa length alone. An 18-month window is shorter, but a well-planned student can still convert it into sponsored employment.

12. Frequently Asked Questions

What is the UK Graduate Route Visa?

The UK Graduate Route, officially the Graduate visa and often called the UK post study work visa, lets international students who complete an eligible UK degree stay to work or look for work without a sponsor or job offer. Details are on the official GOV.UK Graduate visa page.

Is the UK Graduate Route changing to 18 months?

Yes. For Bachelor’s and Master’s graduates, the UK Graduate Route duration falls from two years to 18 months. The change was laid in a Statement of Changes on 14 October 2025 and is confirmed, not just proposed.

When will the UK Graduate Route 18 months rule start?

It applies to Graduate visa applications made on or after 1 January 2027, subject to the latest UK government rules. Applications made on or before 31 December 2026 still receive two years.

Who will be affected by the UK Graduate Route changes?

Bachelor’s and postgraduate taught graduates who apply on or after 1 January 2027. PhD and other doctoral graduates are not affected and keep three years.

Will students graduating in 2026 be affected?

Only if they apply on or after 1 January 2027. Applying on or before 31 December 2026, once the university has reported course completion, secures two years. A UK Graduate Visa 2026 application therefore gets the longer period.

Will students graduating in 2027 get only 18 months?

On the current rules, yes. A UK Graduate Visa 2027 or UK Graduate Route Visa 2027 application from a Bachelor’s or Master’s graduate will receive 18 months.

What is the UK post study work visa 2026 duration for Indian students?

There is no separate rule by nationality. The UK post study work visa for Indian students is two years for applications up to 31 December 2026, 18 months from 1 January 2027 (Bachelor’s and Master’s), and three years for PhDs.

How long can Indians stay in the UK after a Master’s?

If you want to stay in UK after Masters, the Graduate visa gives you two years or 18 months depending on the application date. You can stay longer only by switching to another route, usually Skilled Worker, before it expires. This applies equally to the UK post study work visa for Indians.

What are the UK Graduate Route eligibility and requirements?

You must be in the UK on a Student or Tier 4 visa, have completed an eligible course at an approved UK provider, have studied for the minimum required period, have your university confirm completion to the Home Office, and apply before your Student visa expires. No job offer, sponsor or savings are needed.

Can I work after graduation on the Graduate Route?

Yes. You can work in most jobs, look for work, be self-employed or start a business. Your employer does not need a sponsor licence.

Can I extend the Graduate visa?

No. It cannot be extended. You must switch to another visa, such as Skilled Worker, before it expires.

Can I switch from Graduate Route to a Skilled Worker visa?

Yes, if you have a job with a licensed sponsor that meets the skill, salary and English language rules. See the Skilled Worker visa guidance and the register of licensed sponsors.

What salary is needed for the UK Skilled Worker visa after graduation?

The general threshold is £41,700 or the occupation going rate, whichever is higher. People switching from a Student or Graduate visa can qualify as new entrants from £33,400 and at least 70% of the going rate. Check the GOV.UK salary rules for your job.

Can I get PR after the Graduate Route?

Not directly. Time on the Graduate visa does not count towards settlement. Settlement usually follows a qualifying period on a route such as Skilled Worker, and the rules for that period are under reform.

How much does the Graduate visa cost?

The most recent guidance we reviewed shows an application fee of £937 plus the Immigration Health Surcharge, charged per year of permission. Check the live fee and use the IHS calculator before paying.

Can I bring my family on the Graduate visa?

Only people who were already your dependants on your Student visa can be included. You cannot add new dependants under the Graduate route.

Can I apply for the Graduate visa from India?

No. You must be physically in the UK on the day you apply.

Do I need to wait for my graduation ceremony before applying?

No. You can apply once your university has confirmed successful course completion to the Home Office. The ceremony date does not matter.

Is the UK Graduate Route for Indian students still worth it in 2026–27?

For students with a clear career plan, a course with strong employer links and a realistic route to sponsorship, yes. The Graduate Route visa UK offer is shorter but still valuable. Speak to a GlobalEd counsellor to compare your options.

Is the UK student visa after graduation the same as the Graduate visa?

Not exactly. Your Student visa ends with your course. The Graduate visa is a separate application, made from inside the UK, that lets you keep working or looking for work.

Where can I get help with my UK Graduate Route application?

Your university international office and UKCISA explain the process. GlobalEd also offers visa assistance for students planning their UK study and post-study route.

13. Conclusion

The UK Graduate Route Visa 2026 conversation is really about one date: 1 January 2027. Before it, Bachelor’s and Master’s graduates who apply receive two years. From it, they receive 18 months. PhD graduates remain at three years. Everything else about the Graduate visa, including no sponsorship, no job offer and the right to work or be self-employed, stays the same.

For Indian students, the sensible response is not panic but planning. Choose your course with employability in mind, research sponsoring employers early, understand the Skilled Worker salary rules, and treat the Graduate visa as a bridge with a short, fixed length. Students who prepare well can still turn the UK Graduate Route into sponsored employment, and those who do not need the UK route at all have other destinations to compare.
